I’ve been tagged to share my political views. Oh boy. I do have a lot to say. It seems like the whole world is focused on abortion and taxes and guns and can’t really see past those issues.
So. Abortion. I am very much pro-choice. I believe we are born with the privilege and the right and the opportunity to express ourselves using our own free will. It is not my decision whether you have an abortion. It’s yours. It is my decision that I do everything in my power to be sure that if you decide to go ahead and do it that you have a safe place staffed with highly trained doctors and nurses to help you along with the procedure and a strong support staff to help you deal with the hormonal and emotional fallout that is almost certain with the termination of your pregnancy. History has proven that women will seek abortion regardless of its legality. Women have died and will die at the hands of hacks. This cannot be disputed. Please do not make it possible for your daughter to be one of these women.
I see what happens to children who are born unwanted or to mothers who are incapable of caring for a child. Abortion is not an option in every community in America. Many indigent women do not have the resources to travel to a town where abortions are safely performed. When I was in high school, a very good friend of mine did everything in her power to abort her fetus, short of traveling up to NY and getting an actual abortion. She tried everything from drinking heavily to repeatedly dropping a cinderblock on her stomach. She read about what not to do while pregnant and did every single thing on the list. Her baby was born healthy, and she tried to stay in school- she was always a straight A Honor Student- but she couldn’t. She never finished and as far as I know never got her GED. I am quite sure that her life would have been very similar to mine had she gotten the abortion she wanted, instead she is living in a trailer off West Lake Road and working as a data entry person at some sort of office in our hometown. Most offices in our hometown are closing.
It’s really cute that you think that adoption is an option, but who is adopting all these babies? You aren’t. I invite you to make arrangements to speak to someone in an adoption agency. In reality, these children are shifted from home to home and have discipline problems beyond your wildest imagination. There aren’t too many Foster or Adoptive parents who want a little black baby born to a schizophrenic drug addict whore living under the same roof as their “real” children. I don’t. And I’m pretty damn progressive. Those little white ones born to a 15 year old cheerleader on the Main Line are expensive. I know I can’t afford one.
Teaching abstinence is not enough. I urge you in addition to telling them it is against most moral systems to have premarital or pre-committed relationship sex, to educate your children regarding birth control and safer sex practices. I urge you to support legislation that implements a sexual education curriculum in the public schools. I recommend that you review the information that the children are given and talk about it with your child. Start this early. Twenty years ago when I was twelve, my peers began to have sex with one another. I can only imagine at what age children are experimenting now. Ten? Nine? I wouldn’t be surprised. I plan to teach Jake that abstinence is the absolute safest route to go. I also plan to teach him about birth control options, STD facts (let me stress FACTS), and how to build and maintain a healthy, loving relationship with a partner of his choosing. I do not expect that he will be a virgin when/if he marries. I do not expect him to marry the first person he is intimate with. I do expect that when the time comes that he is faced with sexual decisions he will be armed with the information to make decisions responsibly. Your children are listening to you. They are also watching you. Keep that in mind next time you decide to get close to someone.
And taxes. I am pro-taxes. I want my hard-earned dollars to be used to improve my local schools and roads and health centers and parks and social service organizations. I sure as hell am not going to take a look at my bankbook at year-end and see an extra $4000 that I will donate to PennDOT or the school district or the City. Please take it from me up front and do good things with it so I can enjoy a safer, cleaner, more livable life. I want my child to play outside after a good day of learning on a well-kept street with neighborhood children who are well-fed and educated. I do not want addicts or mentally ill people to go untreated and threaten my sense of security. I want sick people to have access to health care. REAL health care so they get better and they aren’t walking around infecting the rest of us.
I do not want my dollars going to pay other people’s debts. If you were dumb enough to buy something you cannot afford, that’s on you. Whether it is a multi-million dollar company or a big suburban house or a car or a war, I don’t care. Spend wisely. Stop being so retarded with your money.
I do not want my dollars to fund a war we have no business fighting. I want the troops home. We have wars to fight here. I hate to say W is fighting his daddy’s war and silly things like that, but I have yet to hear a valid reason why we are at war with Iraq right now. It breaks my heart to think that my child may never know a life where his country is not fighting. It kills me to think he may want to go and fight this battle. It may kill him. I’m all for homeland security, but I don’t see how being a very large threat to someone else’s homeland is making me more secure. What ever happened to the olden times when nations would just surround the country with battleships and toss a few radar satellites in the sky and have some missiles pointed in the “right” direction just in case?
Guns. Guns guns guns. I believe we all have a right to carry arms. I support hunting, provided you are hunting herds that need thinned (pretty much only due to suburban sprawl, but whatever) and you aren’t hunting farm-raised stock that is released on private land for the amusement of the hunter and the profit of the landowner. It’s your choice to pay some hillbilly to shoot farmed fish in his barrel but I suggest that you and the boys take a real trip up to camp and drink some beers and eat a bunch of junk and shoot your guns at anything that moves and be real hunters, but it is adorable that you take your little Elmer Fudd daytrips from time to time. It gives me and the girls some time to dress up in our cutest little silky jammies that we never let you boys see and feed each other pudding off our fingers and have pillowfights and braid each other’s hair.
ahhhh. Back to guns. My problem isn’t hunters, its all the gun violence stuff I have a problem with. I think buying guns should be harder because too many people are dying. I think gun sentencing should be as stiff as possible. Chances are that if you are caught with an illegal gun you probably should be off the street for a number of reasons.
Guess what else I have an opinion on? Drugs. Legalize, legalize, legalize, control, control, control. Even with my gritty job I see so many more lives and families ruined by alcohol than I do drugs. I want to stop paying for inmates incarcerated for drug offenses and I want to be sure that there is plenty of room in the jails for the real bad guys.
I touched a bit on social stuff. I work in social service, and I think I might like to do policy making in the next few years. I could talk about what I think we need and how I think it might be done but basically we need to use our tax dollars for fair and safe housing, adequate mental and physical health care, affordable utilities and available healthy food sources, a wide variety of addictions services (AA is not for everyone), and education programs that teach adults how to budget their income, keep a job, and properly care for their children. Of course we need welfare and other forms of state aid. Some people really are incapable of holding a job. Are you hiring? Because I know of a bunch of under-educated mentally ill girls who need to support their seven kids. And a few ex-cons who are running with an IQ of about 80 who are trying really hard to take care of their sick parents. For those of you against using tax dollars for these services, what do you propose? Are you aware that the lack of these services is going to make your life more difficult? Do you want to walk past homeless people, be near sick people, crazy people?
Religion and religious morals must be kept out of policy making. Your religion isn’t right just because it is yours. This is why so many people are scared that Obama is somehow some sort of Muslim. Who cares if he is? He’s not. But it wouldn’t matter if we weren’t living under the rules of the religious beliefs of the current administration. Church and state are supposed to be separate here. Just because we have Judeo-Christian roots doesn’t mean we have to be fundamentally Judeo-Christian in all we do. And Judeo my ass. The only thing Judeo that infiltrates my life is the fact that our Program Assistant doesn’t show up to the office on JewDays. And then we fall behind at work.
We need to re-evaluate the level of education our children are receiving. Children are illiterate. Literally. You can make it to high school without being able to read, so long as you are funneled through the proper special education programs. We need to implement adult education services for those who fell through the cracks of the school district. Our nation’s people are operating at a third grade level because they can. It’s disgusting.
Local representatives must make themselves available to the citizens in their district. They have to listen and we have to speak up. We have to start thinking about what is important to us and doing something about it. I know we don’t all feel that we need the same thing, but I don’t want to hear yer bitchin when I beat you to our Rep and he thinks my idea is pretty damned good.
Do you know what is going on in our heartland? With government farming and the corn industry and all that crap? Do you know what you are eating? Do you know what goes in your food? Do you know what the chicken you ate last night is eating before he is sent to be chopped apart? Do you know what dairy cows are eating to make it possible for you to buy a gallon of milk? Do you know what is used to fertilize the semolina that gets turned into your pasta? What’s in all those powdery packets of goodness that you dump on your boxed rice? What sort of dirt your carrots and potatoes grow in? It is all controlled by the government. Says right there, “FDA approved”. What does the FDA work for? Your health or your dollar? Don’t you think you ought to know what you are putting in your mouth? In your baby’s mouth?
Prescription drugs too. About a year ago I was sitting at my dinner table with a friend who has a sister who does trials for a major pharmaceutical company here in town. He says she laughs because she and her colleagues often just “pass” trials because they want to get home to their children. I don’t think that’s very funny. A drug that I take (took) for my arthritis is under fire right now after several people have had problems with it. Last time I saw her she said “oh don’t worry, it only killed the rabbits and made the rats sick. No people actually died from it”. If you watch enough television you’ll see the four minute long commercial telling us how it is actually very safe and we should keep taking (buying) it. No thanks. I know I’ll feel better if I exercise and watch what I eat and maybe pop a Tylenol or seven. Our country is run by these drug companies. Our lives are run by these drug companies. We feel like there should be a pill for everything. Can’t sleep? Pill. Can’t stay awake? Pill. Something hurt? Pill. Can’t do your wife? Pill. Maybe if the government wasn’t putting so much crap in our bellies and we didn’t live like a bunch of sloths we would be feeling a lot better and we wouldn’t need all these meds. But then lots of my friends wouldn’t be livin‘ fat on their six-fig pharm-rep salaries and I won’t be able to go to their swanky parties. Oh man. I just dug myself into a hole with my own political views. I better stop while I’m ahead.
I’m sure I have more to say about stuff. But the boy is being incredibly whiney and the Phils are playing and the laundry isn’t done because I skipped town yesterday and didn’t get back until after midnight and I think there is a rogue Hershey’s Bar in the fruit basket that may as well be divided with the boy and devoured immediately and I need to pee and the laptop is searing a hole in my left thigh.
How about you? Share what you are comfortable with sharing. All I ask is that you are honest. Maybe you will change someone’s mind and you can start building your army of minions and things will start to get done the way you want them done. I might edit this later to specifically call out five of you but for now I’m gonna have a go at that chocolate.
